On Location Across BC: Filming Indigenous Perspectives on AI

Yesterday we spent a productive day on location with the Explora team filming and recording interviews across British Columbia in support of a project exploring Indigenous work and perspectives on AI—an essential dimension that remains underrepresented in many current technology conversations. This production was made possible in part through Explora’s contribution in absorbing key production costs, enabling on-location travel and direct engagement with participants. The trip also included collaboration with instructor and program developer Weaver Shaw, whose expertise is central to the initiative.

The filming supports the UBC Micro-certificate in AI-Assisted English Language Learning, a program designed to address the growing need in British Columbia and beyond for English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners to develop both language proficiency and digital literacy. By combining English skills instruction with hands-on AI literacy and practical tools, the program aims to strengthen communication and digital competencies that transfer directly to academic and workplace environments. The on-location production will contribute authentic perspectives and contextual insights to this unique learning experience.

Participants examine how technologies such as chatbots, virtual assistants, and emerging agentic AI systems enable increasingly personalized interactions, while also considering a broader shift toward the “no interface is best interface” model—where AI operates seamlessly in the background to support more natural and contextual user experiences.

Through applied activities and the use of current no-code platforms, learners connect these conversational and agent-driven approaches with immersive environments, digital twins, and virtualization to create cohesive interactive ecosystems. Together, these technologies support personalization, real-time adaptation, and continuous engagement across customer journeys. The course also addresses ethical considerations, data protection, and evolving consumer expectations, preparing participants to design AI-driven interactive strategies that align engagement, brand experience, and business objectives.
